The difficulties of dyslexia
Dyslexia is a neurological difficulty affecting information processing. It is often noted as difficulties with learning to read or write but also affects skills such as memory processing and organisation. Without the right support, children who have Dyslexia may struggle in lessons and find it increasingly hard to succeed. For many, this can lead to a lack of engagement and enjoyment of school, as well as difficulties in learning and subsequently, later life.
Early identification is key
We must identify Dyslexic children early in schools so that we do not ‘lose’ them, can get the right support for them and ensure they can succeed. After all, these children are the Albert Einsteins and Richard Bransons of the future!
Schools need to work hard on the diagnostic packages they can offer to allow teachers to implement the necessary (and often simple) solutions of support that can make the difference. Whilst there are specific routes for a Dyslexia diagnosis, by identifying children at risk and acting early, we can implement change.
The right support
Once a child is identified as Dyslexic, or even at the risk of Dyslexia, there is a wealth of simple support that can be put into place. Changes such as different fonts, different coloured paper, individual handouts, not asking children to copy and using multisensory methods of teaching can make all the difference. Some children may also, of course, require specific interventions to be put in place to help them progress in their learning.
