Phonics for Parents

Phonics for Parents

The National Curriculum and the Ofsted framework specify that all pupils should be taught to read using a phonic approach. In order to be able to support them effectively this means that parents need to have some knowledge and understanding of basic phonics.

Designed specifically for parents

This resource, designed specifically for parents, guides them through the basics of phonics including terminology, progression and reading with their child along with some ideas for practical activities. Schools can use it as the basis for a parent meeting or send it to parents for use at home. It could also be used to train volunteers and others who may occasionally listen to children reading.

Phonics for Parents is a companion piece to Juniper Education Professional Development Meeting on Teaching Phonics.

Participants will benefit from:

  • gaining an understanding of how reading is taught in school
  • using this knowledge to support their children to develop their reading skills

During the COVID-19 pandemic school closures

Engaging parents in their children’s learning is more important than ever. Send this to your parents to support them in practising and developing their child’s reading.

You can also find useful information, activities and resources in our COVID-19 Resource Hub.
