What is the Code?
Simply put the Code of Conduct sets out the expectation on adults when engaged with the organisation; it contains requirements of behaviour, conduct and the way we do things here – operational “norms”.
What is Included?
The Code covers a whole range of conduct both inside and outside of work (e.g. secondary employment, professionalism which preserves the school’s reputation). It includes maintaining confidentiality and preserving anonymity, media queries, and appropriate use of computers, emails, internet and social media.
Expectations are set with regard to relationships within the school community, the wider community and with service users, and covers the receipt of gifts, hospitality, and neutrality. It also covers dress code, use of financial resources and school property and personal possessions.
Finer Detail Example
Over the years, employees have argued that what they do outside of work is private and not up for scrutiny. This is no longer the case.
Employees may cite that they are unaware of expectations. The Code explains and expands on all areas, gives guidelines for employees to follow whilst delivering core objectives.
Nothing is left to the imagination; rules set out what one needs to do and should not do. The Code is a pattern of required behaviours/conduct and expectations.
Where there is a breach of behaviours/conduct/expectations employers can apply corrective action in the form of additional training, coaching, and where applicable disciplinary consequences.
Communicating the Code
It is helpful and productive to engaging employees in developing the code for their school, as this achieves true buy in; so, discuss with staff to gather their views. Communicate the agreed policy across the school and ensure everyone has easy access.
