Celebrate the day, read for life

World Book Day this year is March 5 so it is a good time to discuss what it’s all about and how to make the most of this celebration of reading in your school.

As a registered charity, WBD is the world’s biggest campaign to provide every child and young person in the country with a book of their own.  Children can use their tokens to claim a free book from the WBD selection or get £1 off any other book.

National Literacy Trust research found that 9% of children and young people say they don’t have a book of their own at home so this is a fantastic opportunity to embrace the love of reading in your school.Whether you host an author visit, dress up as your favourite characters or build book dioramas, promoting reading for pleasure throughout your school community will help encourage all children to claim their free books. If you need ideas is packed full of inspiration to get you started. The books chosen this year include authors and genres that are sure to inspire.  From Supertato to Dogman, Amelia Fang to Alex Rider, each age level provides popular characters that can encourage children to pick up other books in the series.Whatever activities you have planned for the day, be sure to use it as a springboard for year-round reading for pleasure.
