What can we manage that has a positive impact on staff wellbeing?

Work-life balance and workload are key. We’d all like to have time to spend with our families and friends – the energy to pursue our chosen pastimes. The DfE’s School Workload Reduction Toolkit has support and practical resources to help.

Autonomy is important to all professionals – feeling out of control of our working environment is horrible. We want to have some influence over what we do, how we do it and our working hours. This doesn’t mean that changes shouldn’t be made to improve pupil outcomes, but how to manage those changes is critical. The EEF’s Putting Evidence to Work research offers practical and evidence-informed recommendations to ensure that change is managed effectively and has long-lasting impact.

Support from senior leaders and colleagues is vital. Effective school leaders make sure that relationships between members of staff are positive. Ensuring a respectful and supportive working environment is good for everyone.

Pupils’ misbehaviour can be emotionally exhausting. It’s one of the most difficult issues that teachers have to deal with, but it’s worth remembering that most pupils behave well. The common theme through all of this? Effective CPD. Invest the time and money in high-quality CPD and you’ll have a happier staff with increased confidence and enthusiasm, better results, and a workforce who’ll stay with you.
