The importance of RSE

“Today’s children and young people are growing up in an increasingly complex world and living their lives seamlessly on and offline. This presents many positive and exciting opportunities, but also challenges and risks. In this environment, children and young people need to know how to be safe and healthy, and how to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way.” Secretary of State for Education

The statutory delivery of Relationships Education in primary schools has been greeted with some reservation in some quarters, but it’s worth remembering that the focus should be on teaching about positive relationships (sex education is not compulsory in primary schools) and helping children navigate their way through the complexities of friendships, family relationships, and relationships with other children and with adults.

A pandemic within a pandemic

From all around the world we are hearing of ‘a pandemic within a pandemic’. Extended periods of lockdown and the financial pressures of furlough and redundancy have seen huge increases in reports of domestic violence and child abuse. Add to that the unimaginable loss of life over the past year and it’s unsurprising that we are facing a mental health epidemic. As more children return to school, and as time progresses, the impact of the pandemic on their wellbeing will become clearer. The introduction of the compulsory teaching of relationships education could not be more timely.

Focus on healthy relationships

Relationships education should help children understand about their families and people who care for them, about caring friendships and how to manage disagreements, about respectful relationships and the impact of bullying (both on and off line), and about being safe (including appropriate and inappropriate contact). Now, more than ever, children need to be empowered to understand what is, and is not, acceptable in their relationships.

The complete RSE solution: Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 4

The new RSE curriculum was compulsory from September 2020 but due to the impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic the DfE pushed the date back to start of the summer term 2021 if schools weren’t ready to meet the requirements.
