Scutari Sash

Florence Nightingale was a real-life superhero. This replica of a sash was worn by the nurses Florence took to Scutari, Turkey where they nursed soldiers injured in the Crimean war.

What was Florence Nightingale's nickname?

Answer: She was called the ‘Lady with the Lamp’ because every night she walked through the wards of the Scutari hospital with a lantern to check on her patients.

What special award did Florence receive from Queen Victoria?

Answer: In 1907, Florence became the first woman to receive the Order of Merit, an award given by the queen for super-special work.
